Rolls Royce Motor Past LE7
Rolls Royce 6th team kept up their challenge towards the
top of division 3 with a ruthless 10-0 rout of Long
Eaton 7.
Alex
Green
made Dave Wood work hard for his win in the opening
match, equalising at 1 game all before falling to a 1-3
defeat. Ernie
Brown and
Jack Winder then lost in straight games to Frank
Taylor and Brian Chambers respectively.
Ernie narrowly lost the first end of his match with Wood
(12-14) and managed to stem the flow by winning the 3rd
game but eventually lost out 1-3. Alex and Jack suffered
a routine defeat in the doubles match before Alex was
overpowered by Chambers.
With the win secured, Rolls Royce relaxed to take
the remaining matches with some degree of comfort, with
the exception of final match of the evening in which
Wood met stubborn resistance from Jack Winder. After
coming back from 2 games to nil down, Jack finally
yielded in the 5th.

Long Eaton 6 March On
Third division leaders, Long Eaton 6 continued their push
for promotion with an important derby win over Long
Eaton 5. Graham
Woodcock, Mark Rhowbotham and Gareth
Hickling were all in good form to collect a 10-0
“away” win at the Draycott Table Tennis Centre.
Although all the singles matches were complete inside the
5-game distance the contests weren’t as one-sided as the
score line suggests. Despite suffering from seasonal
ailments, LE5’s Malcolm Barlow was still able to win single ends against Graham
and Gareth while
Graham Gobey took games against Graham and Mark.
Jackie Meakin
lost all her matches 3-0 but forced deuces in the 2nd
game against Mark and the 3rd against Gareth.
LE5’s best showing came in the doubles when
Graham Gobey and Malcolm led 1-0 and 2-1 against Graham
Woodcock and Mark before losing out in the 5th end.

3 Long Eaton Teams Still Up For the Cup
Third division Long Eaton 6 claimed the second division 1
scalp of their Walter Reeves Team Handicap
cup campaign when they defeated Spondon 1st team by an
overall score of 466 points to 413.
Enjoying a handicap advantage of 42 points at
the start of the contest, LE6 extended that margin to
win by 53 thanks to solid performances by
Mark Rhowbotham,
Graham Woodcock
and Gareth
Hickling.
Gareth shone most brightly in the role of
giant-killer, accumulating a personal tally of 94 points
out of 99 as he beat Paul Smith (33-10) and Colin
Thompson (32-27) and drew with John Chambers (29 all) in
his three singles matches.
Long Eaton 6th team will face more first
division opposition in the 3rd round when they meet
Sawley 1st. Joining LE6 in the last 16 are Long Eaton 2,
who overcame Sandiacre 2nd by a score of 353-315, and
Long Eaton 8, who are yet to take to the table in the
cup after being awarded a bye in round 1 and a walkover
in round 2.

Long Eaton 5th team was one of the Long Eaton
contingent to fall at the 2nd hurdle as they were swept
aside by 2nd division leaders Littleover 3.
Although
Graham Gobey and
Pat Pidcock
battled bravely to keep the scores close and
Malcolm Barlow
was able to get the better of Adam Smith and Tony Jones,
the division 3 side were unable to amass enough points
to make the most of their handicap assistance. Led from
the front by Aubrey Henry, Sandiacre took the match by a
comfortable 46 point margin.
The Long Eaton 7 youngsters found it difficult
to make an impact against Rolls Royce 2, losing by 99
points, while Long Eaton 3rd forfeited their home match
against Sawley.

Sawley Out of Touch
Long Eaton 6th team racked up its 4th consecutive win of
the new season as Sawley 2 visited the Draycott Table
Tennis Centre for their division 3 fixture.
Graham Woodcock
beat Jon Banner but Sawley responded as Shaun Merrick
overcame Mark
Southern 3-0.
Gareth Hickling restored the home team’s advantage
by overwhelming Graham Shaw.
Mark produced easily his best performance of the night to
gain a gritty 5-end win over Banner (11-13, 15-13, 11-9,
2-11, 11-5) and that result gave the Long Eaton team the
confidence to go on and dominate the rest of the
encounter.
Mark lost his tie with Shaw but by then the contest was
already won. Gareth and Graham cleared up the remaining
2 matches to give a final score of 8-2.

Long Eaton 3 Get Much-Needed Win
LE3 fans must have been wondering where this form had been
hiding earlier in the season. Lying bottom of the
division 1 table going into this match against
fellow-strugglers Sandiacre 2,
Craig Witton, Hannah Tuxford
and Gareth
Hickling (playing up from division 3) went about
setting the record straight in the best possible
fashion.
Craig dispatched all three of the Sandiacre players with
ease in straight-games and looked every bit the Premier
division player he was last year. Hannah lost a close
5-game match against Gary Carr (8-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-9,
9-11), which was the Draycott team’s only setback of the
evening, but recorded good wins over Mark Menzies (3-1)
and William Taylor (3-2). Gareth, meanwhile, made the
transition up to division 1 seem effortless as he
dropped only 2 games all night on his road to 3
wins.
Doubles pair, Craig and Hannah, scored a solid
3-0 victory over Carr and Menzies to complete the rout.

Too Little Too Late For Long Eaton 4
Kevin
Milwain,
Eileen Cheetham and Chris
Edwards endured a horrendous start to their fixture
against Rolls Royce 7th in Derby’s 3rd division, losing
the first 6 matches of the evening (albeit 3 of them
going to 5 ends before reaching a conclusion).
After the match had already been lost, Chris defeated
Graham Hesketh and Lorraine Smedley (both 3-0), Eileen
beat George Taylor 3-1 and Kevin hit top gear to brush
past Hesketh 3-1. Instead of reflecting on what might
have been, LE4 will hope to take this momentum into
their next matches.
3rd November 2008
Long Eaton 7 Bring In Maiden Win
Alistair Hawthorne
maintained his 100% start to the
Derby
league season and was ably assisted by
fellow-youngster,
Alex Green
as the club’s 7th team claimed its first ever win.
All of Alex’s matches (including the doubles) went to 5
ends and although he lost the opening rubber that
was the only blip for the boys as they won 6 of the
7 matches they played between them.
The final score was 6-4 but Sue Gooch was unlucky not to increase the margin of victory as all
3 of her defeats were narrow…indeed in one of her
matches, she went back in time, winning the 3rd game
by a score of 21-19!
