Dragons Den-ied by Students
On the back of an encouraging unbeaten run in
the league and progression in the cup, the young Dragons
were brought back down to earth by a determined Students
E team.
Becky Woolhouse put up a good fight in the
first match against Dave Strett before eventually
succumbing 13-11, 7-11, 7-11, 11-9, 5-11. Emma
Richardson went down in 3 to A Dorrian but Becky and
David Price pulled one back by winning the doubles.
Coping admirably with the absence of team mentor, Colin
Richardson, the youthful pairing outlasted Strett and
Richard Humphrey to claim a deciding 5th end.
Becky won the opening game of her match with
Dorrian but it was all down hill from there as the
Dragons failed to win another end in either reverse
singles or the final doubles, resulting in a 1-5 loss.

Echo’s Resounding Win
Keith Fellows
and Helen
Rainford of the Draycott Echo team claimed an
impressive 5-1 triumph over mid-table Unicorn Avocetts
to maintain their Premier division title challenge.
Keith put Echo 1-0 up with a comfortable
straight-game win over Peter Haluska and Helen doubled
their advantage with a taxing 3-1 success over Rizki
Winanda. The Draycott duo followed that up with a good
3-0 win in the doubles.
Helen’s loss to Haluska was the only blemish of
the night, as Keith put his team back in control with a
3-1 win over Winanda before Echo pressed home their
advantage to claim a hard-fought reverse doubles match
(11-7, 11-8, 9-11, 16-18, 11-6).

Dragons Fly
An inexperienced Draycott Dragons team of
David Price
and Becky Woolhouse earned a place in the next round of the Loughborough
Handicap Cup at the expense of Unicorn Curlews, who were
represented by Alex Plianos and Zhi Cao.
Due to playing against a team from the division
above, the Draycott team had a substantial handicap head
start but still had their work cut out to win through.
Despite losing the opening singles rubbers, the
Draycott youngsters did well to keep the score lines
pretty close. However, heavier losses in the first
doubles match and in David’s match with Cao (12-44 and
11-44 respectively) meant that the pressure was on Becky
to put in a big performance in the final singles match.
She didn’t disappoint and produced one of the best win
of her short table tennis career to outscore Plianos
37-36.
That vital victory meant that even a 20-44
reverse in the concluding doubles couldn’t prevent the
Dragons team from walking away with an overall win by
371 points to 350.

Dragons Draw
David Price,
Emma Richardson and her father
Colin Richardson
fought back from an early 2-0 deficit to earn a
creditable draw against the Students F and help keep
themselves clear of the bottom of division 2.
David lost an agonisingly close opening rubber
to Tom Soar in 5 ends (11-8, 4-11, 9-11, 11-8, 9-11) and
Emma went down in straight games to Luke Barnes.
Colin and David initiated the fight-back with a
fine 3-1 doubles victory, in which they won the first
end to nil. David sneaked home in his 2nd close 5-end
match of the evening, edging his ding-dong battle with
Barnes 11-5 in the 5th.
Emma won the first game of her match with Soar
but unluckily lost the following very tight games 14-16,
9-11 and 10-12, which put the Students 3-2 up with just
the doubles to play.
Colin and David once again paired up and this
time went one better than in the previous doubles
encounter, winning it comfortably 3-0.
Meanwhile, in the premier division, Draycott
Echo defeated Barrow Nomads A by a score of 4-2.
Keith Fellows was the star of the show, winning both of his singles
matches to maintain his 100% record in Loughborough this
season. Mick
Jackson was unable to match Keith’s efforts in the
singles but played his part in two successful doubles
outings.

Honours Even For Draycott and LE
Brian Savage
and Malcolm
Allsop must have been disappointed that their
Premier division clash with Clive Hall and Phil Jones of
the Hugglescote Hares yielded only 3 points after it
promised so much more early on.
Brian and Malcolm both disposed of Hall 3-1 and
combined well to take the first doubles match (3-11,
11-9, 11-13, 11-7, 11-7), so despite Jones’ victory over
Malcolm they led 3-1 with 2 rubbers to play.
Unfortunately, Jones repeated the trick from
before, beating Brian in straight-games. In the deciding
doubles, the Hugglescote duo proved stronger, wining 3-1
to ensure a draw.
