ETTA National
Championships - Latest
Going into the final day of the Nationals, Emma
Vickers is still alive and kicking in both the
Women's Singles and Doubles.
In the Men's Singles, Dave Arrowsmith and Lee Neil
fell at the group stages while Mark Simpson, Alim
Hrji and Will Cooney all progressed as group
winners. Cooney and Simpson faced eachother in the
1st round. Simpson emerged victorious in 4 ends
before succumbing to Gavin Evans. Meanwhile, Hrji
beat John Payne but went out to Damien Nicholls in
the 2nd round.
In the Women's Singles, Sophie Neil was runner up in
her group after overcoming Desiree Joseph but being
unable to find an answer to the impressive Mary
Fuller. However, Abbie Milwain defeated Cherith
Graham to top her group and then outplayed Chloe
Whyte in the preliminary round to set up a last-16
meeting with Emma Vickers, who had had a bye. Both
Draycott players produced fine performances, with
Emma's big-match experience helping her edge a close
contest 13-11, 11-8, 13-11, 11-7.

Emma will play Hannah Hicks in tomorrow's
quarter-final...and will face Hicks again in the
doubles semi-final where they will be partnered by
Karina Le Fevre and Lindsay Reynolds respectively.

Loughborough Closed 2010
Report by Malcolm Allsop

The 2010 Loughborough Tournament was held at the
Draycott Table Tennis Centre on Sunday, February 7th
and attracted a good entry. University students took
the two major titles and provided strong competition
in all the other events but, at the end of the day,
the titles were shared around all the clubs.
The Open Unhandicapped Singles had an entry of 44. The first
couple of rounds were the best of 3 games before the
introduction of the normal best of five format.
Keith Fellows and Jordan Dainty reached the final
with Keith demonstrating his experience to win the
first two games before before Jordan Dainty changed
tactics to play more consistently attacking to wider
angles, yet maintaining pressure upon Fellows even
when forced away from the table. Dainty won the
title in brilliant style.
Quarter-Finals: Keith Fellows bt Lu Zhang; Alastair
Hawthorn bt Hua Sha; Jordan Dainty bt Rachel
Pilgrim; Peter Haluska bt Chris Dukes.
Semi-Finals: Fellows bt Hawthorn
11-2,9-11,11-7,11-8; Dainty bt Haluska
9-11,11-9,11-9,11-9.
Final: Dainty bt Fellows 10-12,7-11,11-6,11-7,11-9
[pictured below].

The Ladies Singles
had an entry of 8 (the best for some years?). Last
year's champion Eileen Shaler was suffering from a
bad back (Derby County have a similar problem, Phil)
and fell at the first hurdle to Rachel Pilgrim who
proceeded to the final to play junior Emma
Richardson, where Emma put up a good showing.
Semi-Finals: Rachel Pilgrim bt Hua Sha; Emma
Richardson bt Amy Humphreys.
Final: Pilgrim bt Richardson 11-6,11-7,11-6.
No surprises in the Junior Singles with Alastair Hawthorn
retaining his title but it was nice to see all the
youngsters performing well and seeming to enjoy the
day.
Semi-Finals: Alastair Hawthorn bt Emma Richardson;
David Price bt Amy Humphreys.
Final: Hawthorn bt Price 11-4,11-7,11-9 [pictured
below].

The Veteran Singles
produced the expected win for Keith Fellows, but
Colin Richardson had a good win over Dave Roche on
his way to the final.
Semi-Finals: Colin Richardson bt Dave Roche; Keith
Fellows bt Tony Cook.
Final: Fellows bt Richardson 13-11,11-6,11-6.
The SuperVets
was, possibly, the most difficult result to predict.
It was not so much "who was the best player?" more a
case of "who could last the pace?" Clive Hall
started with a marathon 11-5,20-18,11-13,9-11,11-4
before a more comfortable than (I) expected win over
Arthur Tomkinson. Ron Forster put paid to the hopes
of the Green family before contesting the final
against Clive, who unfortunately had run out of
steam.
Semi-Finals: Clive Hall bt Arthur Tomkinson; Ron
Forster bt Val Green.
Final: Forster bt Hall 11-5,11-9,14-12.
The Open Doubles
provided Jordan Dainty with his second title in
partnership with Emma Richardson when they beat Bo
Zhang and John Jacques.
Semi-Finals: Dainty/Richardson bt
Pickering/Matsumato [pictured below]; Zhang/Jacques
bt Tomkinson/Hua Sha.
Final: Dainty/Richardson by Zhang/Jacques
5-11,11-3,11-8.

Handicapped Premier Singles:
Semi-Finals: Chris Dukes bt Kieron Kennedy; Ritzi
Wimanda w/o Clive Hall.
Final: Dukes (-5) bt Wimanda (-1)
11-8,5-11,14-12,11-9.
Handicapped Div.One Singles
Semi-Finals: Amy Parkes bt John Jacques; Hua Sha bt
Alastair Hawthorn.
Final: Hua Sha (2) bt Parkes (5)
11-9,5-11,11-7,11-7.
Handicapped Div.Two Singles
Semi-Finals: Mohit Khimji bt Emma Richardson; Johnny
So bt Godfrey Leung.
Final: So (7) bt Khimji (6)
9-11,5-11,13-11,11-6,12-10.
Handicapped Premier Doubles:
Semi-Finals: Wimanda/Bo Zhang bt Dukes/Dainty;
Fellows/Kennedy bt Roche/Haluska.
Final: Zhang/Wimanda bt Fellows/Kennedy
11-5,11-9,11-5.
Handicapped Div.0ne Doubles:
Semi-Finals: Barlow/Cook bt Kingsmill-Stocker/Green;
Tanveer/Baris bt Tomkinson/Hua.
Final: Cook/Barlow bt Tanveer/Baris
11-3,7-11,10-12,11-7,11-9.
Handicapped Div.Two Doubles:
Semi-Finals: Price/Richardson bt Ajit/Croft;
So/Leung bt Khimji/Premji.
Final: Price/Richardson bt Ajit/Croft
7-11,11-6,5-11,11-5,12-10.

Bribar London Open GP
Emma Vickers shone brightly at the Bribar London
Open Grand Prix. In the Women's Open event, she
overcame Helen Rutherford, Hang Yi and Jordyn
Layfield before losing the final to Engle Adomelyte.
However, Emma made amends for that loss by winning
the U21 Women's event, beating Susan Nealon in the
final. Abbie Milwain also performed well, to reach
the last 4 before going out to Emma.

National Junior
Championships
Abbie Milwain enjoyed a relatively fruitful National
Junior Championships. She topped her Girls' Singles
group after defeating (her doubles partner) Laura
Robinson, Chrissie Slot and Harriet Taylor. In the
2nd round, she overcame fellow Draycott player,
Sophie Neil. Sophie finished joint top of her group
following impressive wins over Kirsty Wilson and
Natasha Walsh but suffering a 3-2 loss to Megan
Knowles. She went through in 2nd place on
countback.Abbie got the better of the all Draycott
affair despite Sophie's strong start, with the match
finishing 3-1. In the last 16, Abbie played
brilliantly to comprehensively beat Natalia Slater,
but with only a short rest between matches was
unable to reproduce that dazzling form in the 1/4
finals, going out 3-1 to an on-form Vicky Smith.
Yolanda King was the eventual winner of the event,
defeating Emily Bates and Karina Le Fevre on her way
to a deserved victory. If that was an upset, Daniel
Basterfield more than matched it as he took the
Boys' title, beating Richard Andrews in the final. .
Abbie teamed up with her good friend Laura Robinson
in the Girls' Doubles. They gained comfortable wins
over Rach baker/Emily Standing and then Kirsty
Wilson/Sally Hoang to reach the semis. There they
faced a tough task the excellent Ormesby pairing of
Jess Dawson and Chloe Whyte. Despite being able to
match Dawson/Whyte tactically, which has been a
problem in the past against the left/right hand
combination, Abbie and Laura were narrowly beaten in
4 close ends. In the final, Dawson and Whyte beat
Karina Le Fevre and Mary Fuller 3-0.

Emma in Leicestershire
County Team
by
Malcolm Allsop
Loughborough Table Tennis League made history when
the Leicestershire county team included three
Loughborough League players for the first time when
they played at Weavers Leisure Centre in
Wellingborough.
Keith
Fellows lead the team from the No.1 position winning
six out of fourteen matches as wins were recorded
over Northamptonshire by 6-4 and Cambridgeshire 2nd
by 7-3. The team suffered close defeats 4-6 by
Oxfordshire and 3-7 against Bedfordshire to improve
upon last season’s final position in a very tough
division.
The two
Loughborough players making their debut were Richard
Hayes of Barrow Nomads A and fourteen year-old Emma
Richardson [pictured below, receiving her
Leicestershire county badge] of Draycott Dragons.

Richard
used his backhand counter attack and forehand loop
drives to good effect in his four matches against
Suffolk 1st, Norfolk, Bedfordshire, and Suffolk 2nd.
However the player of the weekend was Emma, aged 14,
who played with determination in all seven matches
and gained confidence as the weekend progressed. By
the second day she was playing some really exciting
table tennis, with some superb counter-hitting
rallies. She can feel very proud of her performances
and will have many years of County table tennis
ahead of her.

Emma at the English Open
Emma
Vickers reached the last 32 of the U21 Girls event
at the English Open in Sheffield. She battled back
from a game down to beat world no.582 Divya
Deshpande of India 3-1 to finish as runner up in her
group despite losing out 3-2 to Belerussian Alena
Dubkova (ranked no. 282).
In the
knock-out rounds, Emma faced a daunting task, up
against world no.33 Elizabeta Samara of Romania and
lost in straight games.
28th Sep 2009
Draycott On Top of Women’s
British League
Draycott
and Long Eaton made a strong start to their Women’s
British League campaign at the first weekend’s
action in Bristol. After the disappointment of
having to settle for being the Premier Division
runners-up last year, Draycott was able to
strengthen its line-up with the addition of 2
England Internationals for the current season. Mary
Fuller made her debut for the club while Emma
Vickers returned to the side after being ineligible
last season due to playing in Sweden. Caroline
Hallows and Jane Vickers make up the rest of the
squad.
Draycott
began with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Knighton
Park. Emma Vickers made short work of Lesley Keast
before Hallows went down in straight games to the
experienced Karen Smith from Leicester. Fuller put
Draycott back on track with 3-1 wins over Jose
Bongers and Keast. Hallows bounced back to overcome
Bongers in the last rubber.
Hollington were the next victims of the Draycott
outfit. Rosemary Rainton beat Hallows but Fuller saw
off Teresa Bennett and Vickers continued her fine
form to thrash Rainton and Sarah Stedman. Stedman
gained a consolation win over Fuller in 5 ends.
Karen
Shepherd, Jess Dawson and Chloe Whyte of Ormesby
proved no match for Draycott. The imperious form of
Hallows and Vickers helped to establish a quick-fire
5-0 lead before Whyte got the better of Fuller in
what was a dead rubber.

Emma Vickers was 100% on day 1.
Draycott
were handed another boost with the news that last year’s champions, Astor
Ladies, had suffered a 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Knighton Park.
Draycott finished the day with a two point cushion over their nearest
rivals.
Sunday
kicked off with the “big 2” going head to head. Emily Bates provided
Vickers’ first loss of the competition and Lindsey Reynolds beat Hallows
to put Astor Ladies in charge. However, Draycott fought back to level
matters. Fuller defeated Lisa Radford and Vickers produced a fine win over
Reynolds, the highest ranked English player in attendance. Bates put Astor
back in front with victory over Fuller but Hallows salvaged a draw thanks
to a gritty 3-2 success over Radford.
The
first half of the event concluded in a slightly disappointing fashion for
Draycott as they could only manage a draw with 5th placed Ireland. It
could have been worse though. Draycott trailed at 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 but
showed great resiliance to draw level each time. Irish no.2 Amanda Mogey,
using medium length pimples to great effect, overcame Hallows before
Vickers beat Sara Dolan. Fiona Dennett’s surprise wins over Fuller and
Hallows came either side of a 5-game epic between Vickers and Mogey. At 2
games to 1 down and trailing by a handful of points in the 4th, Vickers
dug deep to claw her way back into the contest and finally triumph in the
5th thanks to fortuitous net cord. That result put Emma alone at the top
of the Premier Division averages with a 90% win record. Mary Fuller
maintained Draycott’s unbeaten record with a solid 3-1 win over Irish no.5
Dolan, enabling the team to take a 1 point lead into the 2nd half of the
programme, which will take place in Doncaster on the 6th and 7th of
February 2010.

members of the Draycott club in action were Melissa Wright, Abbie Milwain
and Helen Rainford.
Melissa
Wright lost only 1 match from her 10, helping the powerful Drumchapel
Glasgow team into a runaway lead of Division 2. Milwain had a tougher time
for 3rd placed Uxbridge, winning 5 of her 8 matches but losing out to
Melissa Wright as well as Halton’s Rachel Baker and Angharad Phillips.
Helen
Rainford, playing for East Midland Ladies, won 2 of her 8 rubbers and the
team currently lies in joint 4th place.

Open Day
A big thank-you to everyone who took part in or
visited the club's Open Day and BBQ. The event was a
great success with approximately twice as many
people coming through the doors as last year.

The fine weather enabled the Long Eaton Silver
Prize Training Band and the BBQ to go ahead outside
as planned, which proved extremely popular. Inside
the Whittaker hall, the Tae Kwon Do club, Scouts and
Army Cadets provided the entertainment while in the
Bayliss Hall, the robots (and Paul Jennings) saw an
inordinate amount of action.
The exhibition matches were equally well received.
Congratulations to Dave Price, Graham Gobey, Trevor
Kerry, Leah Richardson and Abbie Milwain, who won
their respective groups. Another highlight was the
impromptu doubles match, which saw Dave Arrowsmith
and Jon Bayliss lose a thrilling encounter with Phil
and Emma Vickers. Team Vickers survived 7 successive
match points in the 5th and deciding end to secure
an improbable victory, which prompted Phil into an
applause-milking lap of honour!

teamed up with Hannah Hicks and Alice Loveridge to
represent England in the sunnier climes of Trieste,

English ladies were not to be overshadowed, earning
a creditable 3rd place finish after several day's
competiton.

Medals for the Midlands
Draycott's Abbie Milwain helped the England
Midlands team achieve 2nd place in the Girls Team
event at the UK School Games in Wales.

Lucy Davidson [left], Abbie Milwain
[centre] and Natalie Slater [right]
The Midlands team of Emily Bates, Natalie Slater,
Draycott JBL player, Lucy Davidson and Abbie was
well fancied to compete for the medal positions and
they didn't disappoint, dominating their group with
wins over England North East (7-0), England South
East (5-2) and Northern Ireland (7-0), despite the
loss of Emily Bates, who fell ill.
The semi-final against Wales was a closer affair.
Lucy lost to Angharad Phillips but overcame Megan
Phillips. Natalia Slater won her matches against
Chloe Thomas and Angharad Phillips. Abbie lost to
Chloe Thomas and he Welsh won the doubles... So at
3-all, Abbie played Megan Phillips in the decider.
Despite a vociferous home crowd, Abbie triumphed in
5 to put the Midlands into the final against England
North East.
The opposition line-up of Karina Le Fevee, Mary
Fuller and Chloe Whyte proved too strong for the
Midlands. Abbie fought back from a 2-0 deficit to
beat Chloe Whyte and Lucy beat Mary Fuller, but Le
Fevre won both her singles, Fuller beat Slater and
the North East pairing claimed the doubles to seal
overall victory.
Abbie also reached the last 16 of the singles
event, after losing to Kariva Le Fevre (England
North East) but defeating Riosin O'Reilly (NIR) and
Vicky Smith (England South West) in the group
stages. In the knock-out stages, she took the first
game against Melissa Wright (England North East) but
eventually lost 3-1.

Liverpool GP
A number of Draycott players kicked off the new
season at the Liverpool GP. Emma Vickers blew away
some of the off-season cob-webs as she reached the
quarter finals of the Women's singles and the semis
of the Women's U21 singles before bowing out to
Klaudia Szadkowska and Mary Fuller respectively.
Meanwhile, England's no.2 vett, Lee Neil, got to
the last 4 of the Veterans Singles where he suffered
a surprising loss to Ivan Lewis. Mark Simpson was
another semi-finalist, going out in the last 4 of
the U21 Men's Singles to eventual winner Damian
Nicholls.

on his way to being runner-up in band 10. The one
defeat was to the eventual winner of the group.

Draycott Juniors Star for
England

Emma Vickers, Lucy Davidson [below] and Abbie
Milwain represented England in the Inter-Nation Home
Games, held in Scotland last weekend. Emma came 3rd
in the U19 singles, losing her semi to Ireland's
Clare Nelson in 5. Emma's Junior British League
teammate, Lucy Davidson, went on to take the title.

Meanwhile, Abbie defeated Rachel Farquhar [below],
Megan and Angharad Phillips, Ashley Given, Natasha
Rees, Hannah Avery as well as some "random Scottish
people" over the weekend, enabling her to take 3rd
place in the U16 singles. She lost out to the
eventual winner, Emily Bates, who overcame Natalie
Slater in the final.

England A (Emma, Lucy, Emily Bates, Natalie Slater,
Jessica Dawson, Chloe Whyte, Chris Doran, Emran
Hussain, Lewis Gray, Ping Ho, Sam Walker and Zak
Zilesnick) won the team event, forcing England B
(Abbie, Laura Robinson, Rachel Farquhar, Martha
Travis, Rebecca George, Vicky Smith, Danny Lowe,
Richard Andrews, James Ward, Da Shuai Zhang, Matt
Outhwaite and Igor Morais) into 2nd place.
